The man was arrested by Kent police under the Terrorism Act in the southern port area of Dover on Saturday morning.

The UK's threat level was upgraded from "severe" to "critical" on May 23 following the Manchester bombing on May 22, in which a bomb exploded in the foyer of Manchester Arena moments after US pop star Ariana Grande left the stage.

Police have arrested a second man as part of the investigation into the Parsons Green terror attack on Friday.

The 21-year-old man remains in custody in a South London police station, the Met said.

The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the bombing, according to the Associated Press.

BBC home affairs correspondent Danny Shaw said it was notable that the police had use the word "suspects" in their statements, indicating that they may be looking for more than one attacker.

Detectives say they have so far spoken to 45 witnesses and continue to receive information from the public.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims of the blast as we wish them a speedy recovery", he said.

Hundreds of soldiers and armed police have been deployed to secure strategic sites and hunt down the perpetrators.

Authorities said the suspect carried a white bucket containing an explosive onto the rush-hour train.

On Saturday, police arrested an 18-year-old man in connection with the attack.

"We are still pursuing numerous lines of enquiry, and at great pace", Senior National Co-ordinator for Counter Terrorism Policing Neil Basu told reporters.

"This is a proportionate and sensible step which will provide extra reassurance and protection while the investigation progresses", she said. But it was the only one in 2017 in which nobody died.

The attack is the fifth to take place in Britain in the last six months.

The UK terror threat level has now been raised to critical - the highest level - meaning an attack may be imminent.
